Grade VR STAINLESS
VR Stainless is a high-performance stainless mould steel developed for plastic mould applications that require superior corrosion resistance, good machinability, stable hardness, and long tool life. It is engineered as an advanced alternative to traditional corrosion-resistant mould steels such as 1.2085 and 1.2083 offering improved manufacturing efficiency and better surface finish.
The grade is typically supplied in a pre-hardened condition (30–34 HRC), meaning it can be directly machined without undergoing additional heat treatment. This saves manufacturing time, avoids distortion, and ensures predictable mechanical properties from the start.
Chemical Composition of Grade VR STAINLESS
1. Carbon (C): Medium level for strength and hardness
2. Chromium (Cr): 13–16% (provides corrosion resistance)
3. Manganese (Mn): For strength & machinability
4. Sulphur (Optional): Small addition for enhanced machinability
5. Additional refining elements to improve stability & toughness
The high chromium content places VR Stainless in the category of semi-stainless tool steels, capable of operating in harsh, moisture-prone environments.
Key Properties of VR Stainless
1. Excellent Corrosion Resistance
VR Stainless is designed to resist:
a. Rusting from water-cooling channels
b. Condensation during injection moulding
c. Humidity during storage
d. Corrosive plastics and gases
This makes it ideal for moulds used in high-moisture or non-stop water-cooled production.
2. Good Machinability
Unlike fully stainless mould steels (like 1.2316), VR Stainless machines much more easily.
Features include:
a. Lower tool wear
b. Faster machining speed
c. Smooth milling and drilling
d. Easy EDM finishing
This reduces production time and tooling cost.
3. Stable Hardness (30–34 HRC)
Delivered in a controlled pre-hardened state, VR Stainless ensures:
a. Dimensional accuracy
b. Low distortion during machining
c. Reliable mechanical performance
4. Good Wear Resistance
The structure offers moderate wear resistance, ideal for medium-duty moulds requiring a balance of hardness and corrosion protection.
5. Weldability & Repairability
VR Stainless can be welded with stainless tool steel welding rods.
With proper procedure:
a. Surface hardness remains stable
b. No cracking or porosity issues
c. Repairs and modifications are easy
6. Surface Finish Capability
VR Stainless allows:
a. High-quality polishing
b. Texturing
c. EDM finishing
d. Chemical etching
Though it may not match ESR-grade polishability (like VR 400 ESR), it delivers excellent results for most mould surfaces.
Common Applications
1. Moulds with heavy water-cooling channels
2. Moulds used in humid environments
3. Injection moulds for corrosive or acidic plastics
4. Packaging industry moulds
5. Medical & hygiene product moulds
6. Blow moulds
7. Moulds requiring low maintenance and long service life
Summary
VR Stainless is a corrosion-resistant, pre-hardened, easy-to-machine mould steel offering long mould life, stable hardness, and excellent performance in moisture-rich environments. It is ideal for manufacturers who want a reliable stainless mould steel without compromising machinability or production speed.
