What is Grade 1.2083 ESR Steel?
Grade 1.2083 ESR (Werkstoffnummer 1.2083, chemical designation X40Cr14, also referenced as X42Cr13) is a high-chromium, stainless-type mould steel refined via Electro-Slag Remelting (ESR). The ESR process re-melts the steel through a slag bath under controlled conditions, removing non-metallic inclusions and producing a much cleaner, more homogeneous microstructure than conventionally melted 1.2083.
This refined structure makes 1.2083 ESR significantly better than standard-melt 1.2083 in toughness, homogeneity and mirror-polishing performance, which is why it is the preferred choice for high-end mould manufacturing where precision and surface quality are critical.
The grade is available pre-hardened at approximately 290-330 HB (30-34 HRC) for direct machining, or supplied annealed and later hardened up to 50-52 HRC for wear-critical cavity and core inserts. With roughly 13% chromium, it offers very good corrosion resistance in humid, water-cooled and chemically aggressive moulding environments.
Note: 1.2083 ESR is one of several corrosion-resistant grades Purohit Steel stocks — see the comparison table below for how it compares with 1.2085 and VR Stainless.

Comparison: 1.2083 ESR vs 1.2085 vs VR Stainless
Purohit Steel stocks more than one corrosion-resistant mould steel grade. The table below compares 1.2083 ESR against two related grades to help select the right material for the application.
| Factor | 1.2083 ESR (X40Cr14) | 1.2085 (X33CrS16) | VR Stainless |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chromium content | ~12.5-13.5% | ~15-17% | ~13-16% |
| Refinement | ESR (Electro-Slag Remelted) — ultra-clean, homogeneous | Standard melt | Standard melt, advanced processing |
| Supply hardness | 290-330 HB (or annealed, hardenable to 50-52 HRC) | 280-325 HB | 30-34 HRC |
| Polishability | Superior, mirror/optical-grade | Moderate | Good |
| Corrosion resistance | Very good | Good | Good to very good |
| Best suited for | High-gloss, transparent, medical/optical moulds | Humid/water-cooled moulds, general corrosive-plastic tooling | Heavy water-cooling channels, continuous production |
Grade 1.2083 ESR Chemical Composition
Composition as per DIN 17350 (typical mill range, weight %):
| Element | Symbol | Composition (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon | C | 0.38 - 0.45 |
| Silicon | Si | 1.00 max |
| Manganese | Mn | 1.00 max |
| Chromium | Cr | 12.50 - 13.50 |
| Phosphorus | P | 0.030 max |
| Sulphur | S | 0.030 max |
| Iron | Fe | Balance |
The ESR process does not change the nominal chemistry above, but it materially improves cleanliness — reducing sulphide and oxide inclusions that would otherwise show up as pits or streaks after high polishing.
Mechanical Properties of Grade 1.2083 ESR
Typical values; 1.2083 ESR can be supplied pre-hardened (ready to machine) or annealed for later hardening:
| Property | Typical Value |
|---|---|
| Hardness (pre-hardened supply condition) | 290 - 330 HB (approx. 30 - 34 HRC) |
| Hardness (annealed supply condition) | 235 HB max |
| Hardness (fully hardened & tempered) | Up to 50 - 52 HRC |
| Tensile Strength (Rm, pre-hardened) | 950 - 1050 MPa |
| Yield Strength (Rp0.2, pre-hardened) | 700 - 800 MPa |
| Elongation at Break (A5) | 10 - 14% |
| Impact Toughness (Charpy V, longitudinal) | 15 - 20 J |
| Modulus of Elasticity (E) | ~215 GPa |
Values are typical and can vary with section size, mill batch and the specific heat-treated condition ordered. Mill test certificates (EN 10204 2.2 / 3.1) are available on request.
Physical & Thermal Properties
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Density | ~7.70 g/cm³ |
| Thermal Conductivity (room temp.) | ~20 - 24 W/(m·K) |
| Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (20-200°C) | ~10.5 - 11.0 × 10-6 /K |
| Specific Heat Capacity | ~460 J/(kg·K) |
| Electrical Resistivity (room temp.) | ~0.60 µΩ·m |
As with other high-chromium grades, thermal conductivity is markedly lower than base P20 steel — factor this into mould cooling-channel design.
Equivalent International Grades
| Country / Standard | Designation |
|---|---|
| Germany (Werkstoffnummer, DIN 17350) | 1.2083 / X40Cr14 (also referenced as X42Cr13) |
| USA (ASTM A681) | 420 Modified |
| Japan (JIS G4303 / G4403) | SUS420J2 |
| China (GB/T 1220, closest equivalent) | 4Cr13 |
1.2083 ESR is related to, but distinct from, 1.2085 and VR Stainless — refer to the comparison table above before substituting grades.
Heat Treatment Guidelines
| Process | Guideline |
|---|---|
| Supply condition | ESR-refined, pre-hardened 290-330 HB (ready to machine) or annealed 235 HB max (for later full hardening) |
| Stress relieving (after heavy machining) | 600-650°C, hold approx. 2 hrs, furnace or air cool |
| Softening / annealing | Heat to 750-800°C, cool slowly in furnace (≤20°C/hr) to 600°C, then air cool |
| Hardening (for wear-critical inserts) | Preheat 600-650°C, austenitize at 1000-1050°C, hold 20-30 min, oil or air quench — yields approx. 50 HRC as-quenched |
| Tempering | 200-300°C for maximum hardness (~50-52 HRC); higher tempering temperatures (550-600°C) give a softer, tougher pre-hardened-equivalent condition |

Machining & Selection Notes
- Cutting tools: Being a higher-chromium grade, 1.2083 ESR machines slower than P20-family steel; coated carbide tooling with adequate coolant and moderate cutting speeds is recommended.
- Polishing: The ESR-refined microstructure is what enables mirror and optical-grade finishes — always specify "ESR" when ordering if high polish is required, since standard-melt 1.2083 will not achieve the same result.
- EDM finishing: Both the pre-hardened and fully hardened conditions are well suited to EDM cavity sinking; re-polish after EDM to remove the recast layer for best gloss.
- Welding / repair: Weldability is limited due to the high chromium content; preheat and post-weld stress relief are recommended where repair is unavoidable.
- Grade selection: Choose 1.2083 ESR where corrosion resistance must be combined with the highest achievable surface finish; use 1.2085 for a more cost-effective, general corrosion-resistant option — see the comparison table above.
Applications of Grade 1.2083 ESR Steel
1.2083 ESR is specified wherever a mould must combine corrosion resistance with an exceptional surface finish. Its ESR-refined cleanliness makes it the standard choice for optical and transparent-part tooling.
- Transparent plastic moulds (lenses, covers, display parts)
- Medical and cosmetic industry moulds
- High-gloss injection moulds
- Blow moulds for food and packaging applications
- Moulds operating in humid or chemically corrosive environments
- Precision mould components and inserts
- Mirror-finish and textured tooling applications
Grade 1.2083 ESR for Optical & High-Gloss Tooling
Because ESR refining removes the inclusions that cause pitting during high polishing, 1.2083 ESR is the default choice where a mould cavity must reach optical or mirror-grade (SPI A1/A2) finish.
Medical & Food-Contact Industry
1.2083 ESR is widely used for medical device and food-contact packaging moulds where hygiene, corrosion resistance and repeatable dimensional accuracy through cleaning cycles are essential.
