What is Grade 1.2085 Steel?
Grade 1.2085 (Werkstoffnummer 1.2085, chemical designation X33CrS16) is a pre-hardened, corrosion-resistant martensitic mould steel manufactured to DIN 17350. With approximately 15-17% chromium and added sulphur for machinability, it sits between conventional Cr-Mn-Mo mould steels (like 1.2311 / 1.2738) and fully stainless, ESR-refined grades (like 1.2083 ESR) in the corrosion-resistance spectrum.
The grade is supplied in a quenched-and-tempered (pre-hardened) condition of approximately 280-325 HB (29-33HRC), which removes the need for further heat treatment before machining. The added sulphur content improves chip-breaking and machinability compared to many fully stainless tool steels, while the high chromium content provides meaningful protection against rust, moisture and many corrosive plastics.
1.2085 offers a practical balance of corrosion resistance, machinability and dimensional stability, making it a popular mid-tier choice for moulds exposed to humid or water-cooled environments where full ESR-grade polishability is not essential.
Note: 1.2085 is one of several corrosion-resistant grades Purohit Steel stocks — see the comparison table below for how it compares with VR Stainless and 1.2083 ESR.

Comparison: 1.2085 vs VR Stainless vs 1.2083 ESR
Purohit Steel stocks more than one corrosion-resistant mould steel grade. The table below compares 1.2085 against two related grades to help select the right material for the application.
| Factor | 1.2085 (X33CrS16) | VR Stainless | 1.2083 ESR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chromium content | ~15-17% | ~13-16% | ~12.5-13.5% |
| Supply hardness | 280-325 HB | 30-34 HRC | 290-330 HB |
| Refinement | Standard melt | Standard melt, advanced processing | ESR (Electro-Slag Remelted) — ultra-clean, homogeneous |
| Corrosion resistance | Good | Good to very good | Very good |
| Polishability | Moderate | Good | Superior, mirror/optical-grade |
| Best suited for | Humid/water-cooled moulds, general corrosive-plastic tooling | Heavy water-cooling channels, continuous production | High-gloss, transparent, medical/optical moulds |
Grade 1.2085 Chemical Composition
Composition as per DIN 17350 (typical mill range, weight %):
| Element | Symbol | Composition (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon | C | 0.28 - 0.38 |
| Silicon | Si | 1.00 max |
| Manganese | Mn | 1.40 max |
| Chromium | Cr | 15.00 - 17.00 |
| Sulphur | S | 0.05 - 0.10 |
| Phosphorus | P | 0.030 max |
| Iron | Fe | Balance |
Note the intentional sulphur addition (0.05-0.10%) — unlike most stainless tool steels, this is added deliberately to improve chip formation and machinability, at a modest trade-off in polishability.
Mechanical Properties of Grade 1.2085
Typical values in the as-supplied, pre-hardened (quenched & tempered) condition:
| Property | Typical Value |
|---|---|
| Hardness (supply condition) | 280 - 325 HB (approx. 28 - 33 HRC) |
| Tensile Strength (Rm) | 950 - 1080 MPa |
| Yield Strength (Rp0.2) | 700 - 820 MPa |
| Elongation at Break (A5) | 10 - 14% |
| Impact Toughness (Charpy V, longitudinal) | 15 - 20 J |
| Modulus of Elasticity (E) | ~200 GPa |
| Weldability | Limited (air-hardening grade) |
Values are typical for material supplied in the standard pre-hardened condition and can vary with section size and mill batch. Mill test certificates (EN 10204 2.2 / 3.1) are available on request.
Physical & Thermal Properties
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Density | ~7.70 g/cm³ |
| Thermal Conductivity (room temp.) | ~21 - 24.5 W/(m·K) |
| Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (20-200°C) | 10.5 - 13.2 × 10-6 /K |
| Specific Heat Capacity | ~460 J/(kg·K) |
| Electrical Resistivity (room temp.) | ~0.60 µΩ·m |
Thermal conductivity is noticeably lower than base P20 grades (1.2311/1.2738) due to the high chromium content — this should be factored into cooling-channel design for moulds using 1.2085.
Equivalent International Grades
| Country / Standard | Designation |
|---|---|
| Germany (Werkstoffnummer, DIN 17350) | 1.2085 / X33CrS16 |
| USA (Common trade designation) | AISI 420FM / 420F Modified |
| USA (UNS, approx.) | S42020 |
| France (AFNOR, approx.) | Z33CS16 |
1.2085 is related to, but distinct from, VR Stainless and 1.2083 ESR — refer to the comparison table above before substituting grades.
Heat Treatment Guidelines
| Process | Guideline |
|---|---|
| Supply condition | Quenched & tempered (pre-hardened) 280-325 HB — ready to machine, no further heat treatment normally required |
| Stress relieving (after heavy machining) | 590-650°C, hold approx. 2 min per mm of section thickness, furnace or air cool |
| Softening / annealing (if re-machining softer stock is required) | Heat to 850-880°C, hold approx. 2 min per mm, cool slowly in furnace or air |
| Hardening (if higher hardness is required) | Austenitize at 1000-1050°C, hold approx. 1 min per mm, quench in still air or polymer — this is an air-hardening grade, avoid water/oil quench to reduce cracking risk |
| Tempering | 550-610°C, hold approx. 3 min per mm, air cool |
Available Forms & Sizes
- Round Bars
- Flat Bars / Plates
- Blocks
- Custom sizes cut to drawing via in-house bandsaw cutting
Material is machined, ground, drilled and finished in-house through our precision machining, grinding, drilling, gun drilling, EDM and wire-cut facilities, so blocks can be supplied close to finished dimensions.
Machining & Selection Notes
- Cutting tools: The sulphur addition improves chip control versus many stainless tool steels, but 1.2085 still machines slower than base P20 grades; coated carbide tooling with adequate coolant is recommended.
- Cavity work: Rough and semi-finish deep cavities before final finishing passes to reduce distortion from residual stress release.
- Welding / repair: Weldability is limited because 1.2085 is air-hardening; where weld repair is unavoidable, preheat and stress-relieve after welding to reduce cracking risk.
- Polishing: Achieves a reasonable production-grade polish, but for optical or high-gloss finish requirements, 1.2083 ESR is generally the better choice — see the comparison table above.
- Grade selection: Choose 1.2085 for moulds needing solid corrosion resistance with good machinability at moderate cost; step up to VR Stainless or 1.2083 ESR where higher polishability or maximum corrosion resistance is required.
Applications of Grade 1.2085 Steel
1.2085 steel is widely used across plastic mould manufacturing wherever moisture, cooling water or corrosive plastics would otherwise attack conventional mould steel. Its balance of corrosion resistance and machinability makes it a practical everyday choice for humid-environment tooling.
- Injection moulds for corrosive or chemically aggressive plastics (PVC, flame-retardant compounds)
- Moulds used in humid or coastal-climate environments
- Water-cooled mould systems and cooling-channel inserts
- Medical and hygiene product moulds
- Packaging and food-contact component moulds
- Blow moulding tools
- Water-contact machine components
Grade 1.2085 for Corrosion-Prone Tooling
In mould making, 1.2085 is preferred where standard P20-family steel would corrode from moisture or cooling water contact, but where full ESR-grade optical polish is not required — giving a practical, cost-effective middle ground.
Packaging & Food Industry
1.2085 is used for packaging and food-contact moulds where hygiene, corrosion resistance and dimensional stability under repeated cleaning cycles are important.
