What is Grade VR 300 Steel?
Grade VR 300 is a pre-hardened chromium-manganese-molybdenum-nickel (Cr-Mn-Mo-Ni) plastic mould steel from the NLMK Verona VR Tool Steels range. It is produced via EAF-LF-VD refining, forging, rolling and quench-and-temper heat treatment, and supplied in accordance with EN 10228-3 Class 4 and SEP 1921 Class E/e internal-soundness standards.
VR 300 is delivered in a quenched-and-tempered (pre-hardened) condition of approximately 280-325 HB (29-35 HRC), so it can be machined directly without further heat treatment. Its manufacturing process is specifically optimised to give uniform hardness through sections up to 700mm thick, along with high polishability, high machinability, excellent suitability for texturing and increased thermal conductivity compared to standard P20-family steels.
Note: “VR 300” is Purohit Steel's supply designation for this NLMK Verona VR Tool Steels product — it is not itself a DIN or AISI/SAE standard number. Based on its chemical composition (Cr-Mn-Mo with a nickel addition) it belongs to the same general family as 1.2311 (P20) and 1.2738 (P20+Ni) pre-hardened plastic mould steels; see the comparison table below for how it differs from those grades rather than being interchangeable with them.

Mechanical Properties of Grade VR 300
Typical values in the as-supplied, pre-hardened (quenched & tempered) condition at 280-325 HB:
| Property | Typical Value |
|---|---|
| Hardness (supply condition) | 280 - 325 HB (approx. 29 - 35 HRC) |
| Tensile Strength (Rm) | ~1000 - 1100 MPa (indicative, at supply hardness) |
| Yield Strength (Rp0.2) | ~750 - 850 MPa (indicative, at supply hardness) |
| Elongation at Break (A5) | ~14 - 18% (indicative, at supply hardness) |
| Modulus of Elasticity (E) | ~205 GPa (20°C) |
Tensile, yield and elongation figures are indicative values read from the manufacturer's tempering-curve / mechanical-property charts at the standard 280-325 HB supply hardness, and can vary with section size and mill batch. Mill test certificates (EN 10204 2.2 / 3.1) are available on request.
Physical & Thermal Properties

| Young's Modulus (GPa) | 205 | 201 | — | — |
Reference values per the NLMK Verona VR 300 technical datasheet. Density is typically ~7.85 g/cm³, standard for this class of alloy steel.
Through-Hardening & Polishability
VR 300's manufacturing process is designed to deliver an optimised balance of chemical composition and processing so that hardness stays uniform through very thick sections. Manufacturer hardness-distribution data on a 700mm-thick block shows hardness staying within a tight band — roughly 305-330 HB near the surface, gently tapering to around 290 HB at 400mm depth — meaning large mould bases retain consistent machinability and mechanical performance from surface to core, not just at the outer skin.
The steel also carries a published polishing range from VR01 (rough grinding) to VR13 (dry diamond polishing, achieving Ra 0.03 µm / mirror finish), and is validated for standard mould texturing processes — a genuine advantage for automotive interior/exterior trim and consumer-facing cosmetic mould surfaces where finish quality is critical.
Internal soundness is certified to EN 10228-3 Class 4 and SEP 1921 Class E/e. As noted above, VR 300 is Purohit's supply name for this NLMK Verona product and is not a DIN/AISI equivalence claim.
Heat Treatment Guidelines
| Process | Temperature | Holding Time | Cooling | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Supply condition | Quenched & tempered (pre-hardened) 280-325 HB — ready to machine, no further heat treatment normally required | |||
| Annealing | 650 - 700°C | Min. 2 min/mm | Air or furnace | To obtain <250 HB (24 HRC) and improve machinability |
| Hardening | 860 - 900°C | Min. 1 min/mm | Polymer quench | — |
| Stress relieving | 500 - 550°C | Min. 2 min/mm | Air or furnace | Carry out after machining to remove residual stress |
| Tempering | 530 - 610°C | Min. 3 min/mm | Air or furnace | Carry out after hardening; 2nd temper max 30°C below 1st |
Available Forms & Sizes
- Round Bars
- Flat Bars / Plates
- Blocks (up to heavy sections, given VR 300's through-hardening to 700mm)
- Custom sizes cut to drawing via in-house bandsaw cutting
Material is machined, ground, drilled and finished in-house through our precision machining, grinding, drilling, gun drilling, EDM and wire-cut facilities, so blocks can be supplied close to finished dimensions.
Machining & Selection Notes
- Cutting tools: At 280-325 HB, VR 300 machines well with standard HSS or coated carbide tooling at moderate cutting speeds, with good chip control from its clean, homogeneous microstructure.
- Deep cavity work: Because hardness stays consistent through very thick sections, deep-cavity roughing and finishing passes behave predictably even close to the block core.
- Texturing & polishing: Plan final surface finishing using the VR01-VR13 polishing sequence appropriate to the required roughness (Ra), and confirm the texturing pattern with your mould designer before final machining allowances are set.
- EDM finishing: The pre-hardened condition is well suited to EDM cavity sinking without further heat-treatment concerns.
- Grade selection: Choose VR 300 where thick-section uniformity, thermal performance and cosmetic surface finish matter most; see the comparison table above against 1.2311 and 1.2738.
Applications of Grade VR 300 Steel
