What is EN8 Steel?
EN8 (BS 970 designation 080M40) is an unalloyed medium carbon engineering steel containing approximately 0.40% carbon. It is one of the most widely stocked general-purpose engineering steels in India, valued for its predictable strength, good machinability and cost-effectiveness compared with alloy grades such as EN19 or EN24.
EN8 is normally supplied in the normalized condition at approximately 152-207 HB, which offers a good balance of machinability and as-supplied strength. It responds well to further heat treatment: through-hardening and tempering can raise tensile strength to 700-850 MPa (201-255 HB), while flame or induction surface hardening can raise local surface hardness to roughly 55-60 HRC, giving a wear-resistant surface over a tough core.
EN8 offers good machinability by turning, milling, drilling and threading, and is weldable with proper precautions (preheating and post-weld stress relief) due to its medium carbon content.
Note: for higher hardenability or greater fatigue strength than plain-carbon EN8 can offer, see the comparison table below against EN9 and EN19.

Heat Treatment Guidelines
| Process | Guideline |
|---|---|
| Supply condition | Normalized, 152-207 HB — readily machinable in the as-supplied condition |
| Stress relieving (after heavy machining) | 550-650°C, hold, air or furnace cool |
| Hardening | Austenitize at 820-860°C, quench in oil or water depending on section size |
| Tempering | 550-660°C per target hardness, air cool — yields approx. 700-850 MPa / 201-255 HB |
| Flame / induction surface hardening | Localised heating to 820-860°C followed by rapid quench, giving approx. 55-60 HRC surface hardness with a tough core |
| Welding | Weldable with preheat of approx. 150-200°C and post-weld stress relief due to medium carbon content |
Available Forms & Sizes

Machining & Selection Notes
- Cutting tools: In the normalized condition (152-207 HB), EN8 machines readily with standard HSS or carbide tooling at moderate to high cutting speeds.
- Surface hardening: Where localised wear resistance is needed, flame or induction hardening after machining raises surface hardness to 55-60 HRC while keeping the bulk of the part tough.
- Welding / repair: Weldable with preheating (150-200°C) and post-weld stress relief recommended due to the medium carbon content.
- Grade selection: Choose EN8 for general-purpose shafts, bolts and low-to-medium stress components; step up to EN9 for greater wear resistance and hardenability, or EN19 where higher tensile strength and fatigue performance are required — see the comparison table above.
