What is Grade EN41B Steel?
Grade EN41B (BS 970 designation, internationally known as 41CrAlMo7, Werkstoffnummer 1.8509) is a chromium-aluminium-molybdenum nitriding steel. The aluminium content is the key alloying feature: during gas nitriding, aluminium forms very hard, fine aluminium-nitride precipitates in the surface layer, giving EN41B one of the highest attainable nitrided case hardnesses of any commonly stocked engineering steel.
EN41B is normally supplied hardened and tempered to a core condition of approximately 700-850 MPa (201-255 HB), in which it machines readily. After final machining, components are gas nitrided at a relatively low temperature (approx. 500-520°C), raising surface hardness to roughly 900-1100 HV (about 65-68 HRC) while the tough core hardness is retained.
Because nitriding is a low-temperature diffusion process rather than a quench-hardening process, EN41B components can be finish-machined or ground very close to final size before treatment, resulting in minimal distortion — a key advantage over case-hardening (carburizing) steels for precision parts.
Note: EN41B is often compared with case-hardening grades such as EN36, which use a different surface-hardening mechanism — see the comparison table below.

Comparison: EN41B vs EN36 vs EN19
EN41B, EN36 and EN19 all provide hard, wear-resistant working surfaces on tough alloy steel components, but achieve this through three different metallurgical routes. The table below compares them to help select the right process and grade for the application.
| Factor | EN41B (Nitriding) | EN36 (Case-Hardening) | EN19 (Through-Hardening) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface-hardening method | Gas nitriding (diffusion, ~500-520°C) | Carburizing + quench hardening (~900°C) | None — uniform through-hardness |
| Typical case/surface hardness | 900-1100 HV (~65-68 HRC) | 58-62 HRC (case) | Not case hardened |
| Core hardness | 201-277 HB (tough) | Tough, low-carbon core | 248-302 HB uniform |
| Distortion after treatment | Very low (low process temperature) | Higher (quench from ~900°C) | N/A |
| Best suited for | Precision gears, spindles, hydraulic components needing very high surface hardness with minimal distortion | Gears and shafts needing a deep, tough case for heavy contact loads | Medium-to-heavy shafts and gears not requiring a separate hard surface |
| Relative process cost | Medium-High | Medium | Lowest |
Grade EN41B Chemical Composition

EN41B is a dedicated nitriding grade and is not interchangeable with case-hardening steels such as EN36 — see the comparison table above.
Heat Treatment Guidelines
| Process | Guideline |
|---|---|
| Supply condition | Hardened & tempered core, 201-255 HB (R condition) — readily machinable |
| Stress relieving (after heavy machining) | 600-650°C, hold, air cool |
| Core hardening | Austenitize at 880-930°C, oil quench |
| Tempering | 600-680°C — must be tempered above the intended nitriding temperature to preserve core properties during nitriding |
| Gas nitriding | Approx. 500-520°C for 20-100+ hours depending on required case depth, giving approx. 900-1100 HV (65-68 HRC) surface hardness |
Available Forms & Sizes
- Round Bars
- Flat Bars / Plates
- Blocks
- Custom sizes cut to drawing via in-house bandsaw cutting
Material is machined, ground, drilled and finished in-house through our precision machining, grinding, drilling, gun drilling, EDM and wire-cut facilities, so components can be supplied close to finished dimensions before nitriding.
Machining & Selection Notes
- Machining sequence: Machine or grind components close to final size in the hardened & tempered core condition, then nitride last — the low nitriding temperature minimises further distortion.
- Tempering temperature: Always ensure the core tempering temperature is above the planned nitriding temperature, otherwise core hardness and strength will drop during the nitriding cycle.
- Case depth control: Nitriding time and temperature control case depth; deeper cases require longer cycles and should be specified based on expected contact stress.
- Grade selection: Choose EN41B where very high surface hardness and minimal distortion are essential; choose EN36 where a deeper, tougher case is needed for heavy contact loads; choose plain EN19 where no separate hard surface is required — see the comparison table above.
Applications of Grade EN41B Steel
EN41B is used wherever a component needs a very hard, wear-resistant working surface with minimal distortion and a tough supporting core, across mould making, gear manufacturing and precision hydraulic engineering.
- Gears, pinions and gear shafts
- Camshafts and cam followers
- Valve stems and valve guides
- Hydraulic cylinder rods and pistons
- Precision spindles and bushings
- Injection moulding equipment components
- Connecting rods and small extruder screws

EN41B for Mould Making
In mould making, EN41B is used for cavity inserts, guide components and wear surfaces where a very high, localised surface hardness is required without the distortion risk of a full quench-hardening cycle.
