What is Grade EN47 Steel?
Grade EN47 (BS 970 designation 735A50, internationally known as 50CrV4 / 51CrV4) is a chromium-vanadium spring steel. The vanadium addition refines grain structure and improves hardenability and toughness compared with plain-carbon spring steels, giving EN47 excellent elasticity, fatigue resistance and shock resistance under repeated dynamic loading.
EN47 is normally supplied in the annealed or as-rolled condition (approx. 197-255 HB) for ease of machining and forming, then oil-hardened and tempered by the end user to develop spring properties. In the hardened & tempered condition it typically reaches 45-55 HRC, corresponding to a tensile strength in the region of 1550-1900 MPa depending on the tempering temperature chosen.
Because the tempering temperature directly controls the final balance of hardness, elasticity and toughness, EN47 components are always tempered promptly after quenching, while still warm, to reduce the risk of quench cracking.
Note: EN47 is a dedicated spring/fatigue-duty grade and is not a substitute for plain-carbon or higher-alloy structural grades — see the comparison table below.

Comparison: EN47 vs EN9 vs EN24
EN47 is purpose-built for dynamic, fatigue-loaded spring applications, unlike general-purpose engineering grades. The table below compares it against two other EN-series grades Purohit Steel stocks, to help select the right material for the application.
| Factor | EN47 (735A50) | EN9 (070M55) | EN24 (817M40) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type | Cr-V spring steel | Unalloyed high carbon steel | Ni-Cr-Mo alloy steel |
| Primary design intent | Repeated dynamic / fatigue loading (springs) | Static or low-cycle shafts, gears | High-strength, high-fatigue structural components |
| Hardness (hardened & tempered) | 45-55 HRC | ~200-250 HB (rarely fully hardened) | 269-321 HB (Q/T) |
| Tensile strength (H&T) | 1550-1900 MPa | 700-900 MPa | 850-1000+ MPa |
| Elastic / fatigue behaviour | Excellent (purpose-designed for springs) | Limited | Good, but not spring-optimised |
| Best suited for | Leaf/coil springs, die springs, dynamically loaded components | General shafts, gears, medium-wear components | Heavy-duty shafts, gears, aerospace/automotive high-stress parts |
Grade EN47 Chemical Composition
Composition as per BS 970 735A50 (typical mill range, weight %):
| Element | Symbol | Composition (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon | C | 0.45 - 0.55 |
| Silicon | Si | 0.10 - 0.35 |
| Manganese | Mn | 0.60 - 0.90 |
| Chromium | Cr | 0.90 - 1.20 |
| Vanadium | V | 0.15 min |
| Phosphorus | P | 0.040 max |
| Sulphur | S | 0.040 max |
| Iron | Fe | Balance |
Mechanical Properties of Grade EN47
Typical values across the common supply and heat-treated conditions:
| Property | Annealed (Supply) | Hardened & Tempered (Spring) |
|---|---|---|
| Hardness | 197 - 255 HB | 45 - 55 HRC |
| Tensile Strength (Rm) | — | 1550 - 1900 MPa |
| Yield Strength (Rp0.2) | — | 1300 - 1600 MPa |
| Elongation at Break (A) | — | 6 - 10% |
| Impact Toughness (Charpy V) | — | 15 - 25 J |
| Modulus of Elasticity (E) | ~206 GPa | |
Values for the hardened & tempered condition vary significantly with tempering temperature and section size — higher tempering temperatures reduce hardness and tensile strength but improve toughness. Mill test certificates (EN 10204 2.2 / 3.1) are available on request.
Physical & Thermal Properties
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Density | 7.85 g/cm³ |
| Thermal Conductivity (room temp.) | ~38 - 42 W/(m·K) |
| Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (20-200°C) | ~12 × 10-6 /K |
| Specific Heat Capacity | ~460 J/(kg·K) |
Equivalent International Grades
| Country / Standard | Designation |
|---|---|
| UK (BS 970) | EN47 / 735A50 |
| Germany (DIN, Werkstoffnummer) | 50CrV4 / 51CrV4 (1.8159) |
| USA (AISI / SAE) | 6150 |
| Japan (JIS) | SUP10 |
| France (AFNOR) | 50CV4 |
EN47 is closely related to, but not identical across every standard to, DIN 50CrV4 / 51CrV4 — minor composition differences exist between the BS and DIN specifications.
Heat Treatment Guidelines
| Process | Guideline |
|---|---|
| Supply condition | Annealed / as-rolled, approx. 197-255 HB — machinable and formable |
| Stress relieving | 600-650°C, hold, air cool |
| Annealing (softening) | Heat to 820-840°C, soak, cool slowly in the furnace |
| Hardening | Preheat 650-700°C, then austenitize at 830-860°C, oil quench |
| Tempering | 400-600°C depending on target hardness — temper promptly while parts are still warm from quenching to reduce cracking risk; gives approx. 45-55 HRC |
Available Forms & Sizes
- Round Bars
- Flat Bars
- Custom sizes cut to drawing via in-house bandsaw cutting
Material is machined, ground, drilled and finished in-house through our precision machining, grinding, drilling, gun drilling, EDM and wire-cut facilities, so components can be supplied close to finished dimensions.
Machining & Selection Notes
- Machining: EN47 machines best in the annealed/as-rolled condition (197-255 HB) with standard HSS or carbide tooling; hardening and tempering are normally carried out after machining and forming.
- Tempering control: Final hardness, elasticity and toughness are set by the tempering temperature — lower tempering temperatures give higher hardness/strength but reduced toughness, and vice versa.
- Quench cracking risk: Because of the relatively high carbon and alloy content, parts should be tempered immediately after quenching while still warm.
- Grade selection: Choose EN47 specifically for springs and dynamically/fatigue-loaded parts; use EN9 for simpler statically loaded shafts, or EN24 where very high structural strength (rather than spring elasticity) is the priority — see the comparison table above.
Applications of Grade EN47 Steel
EN47 is the preferred choice wherever a component must flex repeatedly and return to shape without fatigue failure, spanning automotive suspension, mould tooling and general spring manufacturing.
- Leaf springs and coil springs
- Spring washers and circlips
- Die and mould ejector / return springs
- Shafts and axles subjected to torsional fatigue
- Steering knuckles and suspension components
- Gears, pinions and spindles under repetitive stress
- Mechanical linkages and connecting rods
- Rollers, levers and press components
EN47 for Mould Making
In mould and die making, EN47 is used for die springs, ejector return springs and other fatigue-loaded components that must retain their elastic properties over long production runs.
Spring Manufacturing & Automotive Suspension
EN47 is extensively used for leaf and coil springs in automotive suspension systems and heavy machinery, where its high elastic limit and fatigue resistance ensure long service life under continuous dynamic loading.
