What is EN Series Steel?
EN Series steel refers to a group of British Standard engineering and alloy steels widely used in mechanical, automotive and industrial manufacturing. The range spans plain medium-carbon grades (EN8, EN9) through chromium-molybdenum and nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy steels (EN19, EN24), high-carbon chromium bearing steel (EN31), nickel-chromium case-hardening steel (EN36), chromium-aluminium-molybdenum nitriding steel (EN41B) and chromium-silicon-vanadium spring steel (EN47).
Each grade is selected based on carbon content, alloying elements and the heat treatment it responds to — through-hardening, case-hardening, nitriding or spring tempering — making the EN Series the default choice for shafts, gears, axles, bearings, springs and general machine-tool components.
Each grade below has its own dedicated technical page with full chemical composition, mechanical properties and heat treatment guidelines — use the grades table to jump to the grade that fits your application.

EN Series Steel Grades in This Category
Each grade is stocked with full technical data on its own dedicated page — click through for chemical composition, mechanical properties and heat treatment guidelines.
| Grade | Typical Property | Best For | Full Grade Page |
|---|---|---|---|
| EN8 | Medium-carbon (~0.4% C) general engineering steel, ~150-200 HB as supplied | General-purpose shafts, bolts, spindles, small gears | View Grade → |
| EN9 | Higher-carbon (~0.5-0.6% C) carbon steel, better strength/wear than EN8 | Shafts, spindles, gears, small tools | View Grade → |
| EN19 | Cr-Mo alloy steel, ~850-1000 MPa tensile after hardening & tempering | Automotive/engineering shafts, gears, connecting rods, bolts | View Grade → |
| EN24 | Ni-Cr-Mo alloy steel, ~850-1100 MPa tensile, higher toughness than EN19 | Highly stressed gears, shafts, axles, aircraft/automotive components | View Grade → |
| EN31 | High-carbon chromium bearing steel, through-hardens to ~58-65 HRC | Ball/roller bearings, rollers, punches, gauges | View Grade → |
| EN36 | Ni-Cr case-hardening steel, case ~58-62 HRC with tough core | Case-hardened gears, pins, cams, shafts | View Grade → |
| EN41B | Cr-Al-Mo nitriding steel, nitrided surface hardness up to ~900-1000 HV | Nitrided gears, shafts, valve parts, cylinder liners | View Grade → |
| EN47 | Cr-Si-V spring steel, ~45-50 HRC | Leaf springs, coil springs, spring washers | View Grade → |

Applications & Uses of EN Series Steel
- Automotive shafts, gears and axles
- Bearings and rollers
- Springs (leaf, coil and washer)
- Pins and cams
- General machine-tool components
- Fasteners (bolts, nuts, studs)
Choosing the Right Grade
For general-purpose shafts, spindles and fasteners, the plain carbon grades EN8 and EN9 are the economical choice, with EN9 offering somewhat higher strength and wear resistance where EN8 falls short. Where higher tensile strength and toughness are required — automotive shafts, gears and connecting rods — the alloy grades EN19 and EN24 are preferred, with EN24 chosen over EN19 when even greater toughness and load capacity are needed, such as highly stressed gears and axles. EN31 is the standard choice for bearing components thanks to its high through-hardened wear resistance. EN36 is selected when a component needs a hard, wear-resistant case with a tough core, such as case-hardened gears and pins. EN41B is chosen specifically when nitriding is required for a hard, distortion-free surface on shafts and valve parts. EN47 is the go-to grade for automotive and industrial springs requiring high fatigue strength.
