Purohit Steel is a leading P20+Ni Plastic Mould Steel exporter and supplier in India. "P20+Ni" (also called P20 Modified) is the trade name for a nickel-alloyed upgrade of standard P20 steel, purpose-built for large mould blocks. This page explains what P20+Ni actually is, when it makes sense over base P20, how to evaluate a supplier, and where to find the full technical datasheet for the specific P20+Ni grade we stock.
If you already know you need chemical composition, mechanical property tables and heat treatment data, go straight to our Grade 1.2738 (P20+Ni) technical page — that is Purohit Steel's DIN-standardised P20+Ni grade, with a full datasheet, comparison tables and downloadable PDF. This page instead covers the broader picture: what P20+Ni means as a category, and how to buy it correctly.

What is P20+Ni Steel?
"P20+Ni" (also marketed as P20 Modified) is not a separately standardised AISI/SAE code but an industry-wide trade name for a family of pre-hardened, chromium-manganese-molybdenum mould steel with roughly 0.9-1.2% nickel added. The German DIN equivalent that most mills and buyers reference is 1.2738 (40CrMnNiMo8-6-4).
The nickel addition is the whole point of this grade: it improves through-hardenability, meaning the core of a thick mould block hardens almost as evenly as its surface during quenching. Plain P20 (1.2311) can show a meaningful hardness drop-off toward the centre of large sections; P20+Ni largely solves that problem, which is why it became the default upgrade for large plastic injection mould bases.
Like base P20, P20+Ni is supplied pre-hardened (typically 32-37 HRC) directly from the mill, so mould makers can machine cavities and cores without a separate hardening cycle — but with the added benefit of more predictable, uniform mechanical properties across a large block.
Why Buyers Search for "P20+Ni Steel"
- Designing a large mould base and worried about hardness uniformity through a thick section — you likely want the full Grade 1.2738 datasheet to confirm hardness range, tensile strength and machining guidance.
- Comparing P20+Ni to base P20 to decide whether the nickel upgrade is worth it for their specific mould size and budget — see the P20 family comparison below.
- Sourcing large-block material in India and need a stockist who genuinely holds large sections in ready stock — see how to choose a supplier below.
- Checking whether P20+Ni suits their application — automotive, packaging, appliance or industrial tooling — see P20+Ni across industries below.
How to Choose a P20+Ni Steel Supplier
Because P20+Ni is typically ordered for larger, more expensive mould blocks, the cost of getting the supplier wrong is higher than with smaller P20 orders. Here is what to verify before committing:
- Verified mill test certificates: Ask for EN 10204 2.2 or 3.1 certificates confirming actual chemical composition, including nickel content, and hardness for the specific batch.
- Evidence of through-hardness on large sections: The whole reason to pay more for P20+Ni is uniform core hardness — ask how the supplier verifies this on the block sizes you need.
- Genuine ready stock in large sizes: Confirm the supplier physically stocks large blocks rather than placing a special import order once you commit, which can add significant lead time on big tooling projects.
- In-house heavy machining capability: Bandsaw cutting, machining, grinding, drilling, gun drilling, EDM and wire-cut capable of handling large, heavy blocks in-house reduces handling risk and vendor coordination.
- Technical support for grade selection: A supplier who can confirm whether your mould actually needs P20+Ni, or whether base P20 or a corrosion-resistant grade would serve better, is more valuable than one who simply quotes what is asked.
- Export documentation and packaging: For export orders, confirm proper packing and shipping documentation for heavy sections.

The P20 Family at a Glance
"P20+Ni" is one of two related grades that Purohit Steel stocks within the P20 family. Full technical data for each is published on its own dedicated page — this table is only a quick-reference summary, not a substitute for the datasheets.
| Grade | DIN Designation | Best For | Full Datasheet |
|---|---|---|---|
| P20+Ni (nickel-added) | 1.2738 (40CrMnNiMo8-6-4) | Large mould blocks needing deep, uniform hardenability | View Grade 1.2738 → |
| P20 (base grade) | 1.2311 (40CrMnMo7) | Small to medium moulds, general mould-base tooling | View Grade 1.2311 → |
If your application involves corrosive plastics, humidity, or water-cooled cavities, also consider our corrosion-resistant grades: 1.2085 and 1.2083 ESR.

P20+Ni's uniform through-hardness makes it the preferred material wherever a plastic mould base is large, thick-sectioned, or produced in very high volumes:
Automotive
Used for large bumper, dashboard and structural interior/exterior trim moulds where consistent core hardness across a big cavity is essential for long tool life.
Packaging & Consumer Goods
Used for large container, crate and appliance housing moulds that need predictable dimensional stability over very high production volumes.
Industrial & Die-Casting Tooling
Used for large mould base plates, holder blocks and low-pressure die-casting dies where section thickness would otherwise cause uneven hardness in base P20.
High-Volume Injection Moulding
Used wherever mould life and dimensional consistency across millions of cycles justify the additional cost of the nickel-alloyed grade over base P20.
