What is Hot Work Tool Steel?
Hot work tool steels are chromium and tungsten alloyed tool steels designed to retain their hardness and strength at elevated working temperatures, typically 400-600°C. Unlike plastic mould steel, these grades are stocked in the annealed (soft) condition for machining, then hardened and tempered to a working hardness of roughly 40-55 HRC once the tool geometry is finished.
The category is built around resistance to thermal fatigue (heat-checking), high-temperature strength and toughness — properties essential for dies and tooling that repeatedly contact molten or hot-worked metal, such as aluminium die-casting dies, hot forging dies and extrusion tooling.
Each grade below has its own dedicated technical page with full chemical composition, mechanical properties and heat treatment guidelines — use the grades table to jump to the grade that fits your application.

Applications & Uses of Hot Work Tool Steel
- Aluminium, zinc and magnesium die-casting dies
- Hot forging dies and forging hammers
- Hot extrusion tooling and dies
- Hot shear blades
- Die-casting inserts, cores and pins
- Press tooling exposed to elevated temperature
- Structural forging tooling requiring shock resistance
Choosing the Right Grade
H11 and H13 are the industry-standard choices for aluminium die-casting and general hot work tooling, with H13 offering marginally better wear resistance and H11 slightly higher toughness — both are stocked ESR-refined for premium cleanliness. H21 is preferred where tooling faces extreme, sustained heat beyond what H11/H13 can reliably handle. DB6 is chosen where toughness and resistance to mechanical shock are the priority, such as in forging dies subject to repeated impact.
Industries We Serve
- Die-casting industry (automotive, appliances, hardware)
- Forging industry
- Extrusion (aluminium and non-ferrous)
