What is Plastic Mould Steel?
Plastic mould steel is a family of pre-hardened alloy and stainless-type tool steels engineered specifically for making plastic injection moulds, blow moulds and related tooling. Unlike hardened die steels, these grades are supplied already quenched and tempered to a working hardness — typically in the 280-390 HB range — so mould makers can machine cavities directly without a separate hardening cycle.
The category spans base Cr-Mn-Mo grades such as 1.2311 (P20), nickel-added variants like 1.2738 for large blocks, high-chromium stainless-type grades such as 1.2085, 1.2083 ESR and the VR16 family for corrosive plastics and humid environments, and the VR300/VR400 series engineered for uniform hardness through very large mould sections.
Each grade below has its own dedicated technical page with full chemical composition, mechanical properties, heat treatment guidelines and machining notes — use the grades table to jump to the grade that fits your application.

Applications & Uses of Plastic Mould Steel
- Plastic injection moulds (small, medium and large size)
- Blow moulds
- Low-pressure die-casting dies
- Automotive dashboards, bumpers, interior trim and precision plastic component moulds
- Tooling plates and mould base components
- Extrusion dies
- Packaging and household product moulds
- Electronics and consumer goods moulds
- Medical and food-contact plastic component moulds (corrosion-resistant grades)
Choosing the Right Grade
For small to medium moulds with moderate production runs, 1.2311 offers the best value. Step up to 1.2738 or VR300/VR400 for large blocks that need uniform core hardness. Where corrosive plastics, humid environments or food/medical contact are involved, choose 1.2085, 1.2083 ESR or the VR16 family for their added corrosion resistance. The ESR-refined variants (1.2083 ESR, VR16 HH ESR, VR400 ESR) offer the cleanest steel for high-gloss and optical-grade cavity finishes.
