Purohit Steel is a leading High Speed Steel Stockist and Exporter in India, supplying the molybdenum-tungsten HSS grades used for cutting tools and tooling that must retain hardness at elevated temperatures — M2, M35 (cobalt-added) and M42 (high-cobalt) — for drills, taps, reamers, milling cutters and high-performance cutting tools.

As an ISO-certified company established in 1965, we maintain ready stock of High Speed Steel in round bar, flat bar and block form, backed by in-house bandsaw cutting, machining, grinding and EDM support for fast turnaround across India and export markets.

What is High Speed Steel?

High Speed Steel (HSS) is a family of highly alloyed tool steels designed to retain hardness, strength and cutting performance at the elevated temperatures generated during high-speed machining. Alloying elements such as tungsten, molybdenum, chromium, vanadium and, in the higher grades, cobalt give HSS its characteristic red hardness — the ability to hold a cutting edge even as friction heats the tool tip.

HSS is stocked in the annealed (soft) condition, typically around 230-260 HB, for ease of machining, and is then hardened and tempered to a working hardness of roughly 63-70 HRC depending on grade, once the tool geometry has been finished. The category is built around wear resistance, toughness and heat resistance — properties essential for drills, taps, reamers, milling cutters and other cutting tools that must hold an edge through repeated, high-speed contact with the workpiece.

Applications & Uses of High Speed Steel

  • Twist drills
  • Taps
  • Reamers
  • Milling cutters
  • Lathe & planer tools
  • Punches
  • Blanking & piercing tools
  • Woodworking tool bits
  • General cutting tool manufacturing

Choosing the Right Grade

M2 is the industry-standard choice for general-purpose, cost-sensitive tooling, offering a proven balance of red hardness, wear resistance and toughness. M35 is preferred where tooling faces tougher materials or needs slightly higher heat resistance than M2 can reliably deliver, such as stainless steel machining. M42 is chosen for the most demanding high-temperature, high-wear cutting applications where premium tool life justifies the higher cobalt content.

Industries We Serve

  • Cutting tool manufacturing
  • Engineering & tooling workshops
  • Automotive component machining
  • Press tool & die manufacturing
  • General machine shops
  • Woodworking tool manufacturing

Frequently Asked Questions

Purohit Steel is a leading High Speed Steel stockist and exporter in India, supplying M2, M35 and M42 grades from ready stock with in-house machining support.

It is used for twist drills, taps, reamers, milling cutters, lathe and planer tools, punches, blanking and piercing tools, woodworking tool bits and general cutting tool manufacturing.

M2 is a general-purpose Mo-W-V high speed steel hardening to about 63-66 HRC with a good balance of red hardness, wear resistance and toughness; M35 adds around 5% cobalt for better red hardness and heat resistance, suiting tougher materials and stainless steel machining. See the grades table above.

M42 is a high-cobalt (~8% Co) high speed steel hardening to roughly 66-70 HRC, offering the highest red hardness and wear resistance in this range, used for high-performance cutting tools, punches and blanking tools in demanding production runs.

We stock High Speed Steel in the annealed (soft) condition, typically around 230-260 HB, suitable for machining. It is hardened by the customer or through our value-added services to the required 63-70 HRC working hardness depending on grade.
