Purohit Steel is a leading Cold Work Tool Steel Stockist and Exporter in India, supplying the high-carbon, oil-hardening and shock-resisting grades used for tooling that operates at or near room temperature — D2, D3, O1, O2, S1, S7 and A2 — for punches, dies, gauges and cutting tools.

As an ISO-certified company established in 1965, we maintain ready stock of cold work tool steel in round bar, flat bar and block form, backed by in-house bandsaw cutting, machining, grinding and EDM support for fast turnaround across India and export markets.

What is Cold Work Tool Steel?

Cold work tool steels are high-carbon alloy steels designed for tooling that operates at or near room temperature, where wear resistance, edge retention and dimensional stability under hardening are the priorities. The category is generally split into three hardening families: high-carbon high-chromium air-hardening grades (D2, D3), oil-hardening grades (O1, O2), and shock-resisting grades (S1, S7) alongside the versatile air-hardening A2.

These grades are stocked in the annealed (soft) condition for machining, then hardened and tempered to a working hardness typically between 54-63 HRC depending on the grade and application.

Each grade below has its own dedicated technical page with full chemical composition, mechanical properties and heat treatment guidelines — use the grades table to jump to the grade that fits your application.

Applications & Uses of Cold Work Tool Steel

  • Blanking and piercing dies
  • Forming and drawing dies
  • Punches and press tooling
  • Shear blades and slitter knives
  • Gauges and precision measuring tools
  • Cold forging and coining dies
  • Chisels and hand tools subject to impact
  • Thread rolling dies

Choosing the Right Grade

For maximum wear resistance in long production runs, D3 and D2 are the standard choice, with D2 offering a better toughness balance for general die work. Where machinability and dimensional stability during hardening matter most — precision gauges, knives and punches — O1 and O2 oil-hardening grades are preferred. Where tooling faces repeated impact rather than pure abrasive wear, S1 and S7 shock-resisting grades or the air-hardening A2 offer a better toughness-to-wear-resistance balance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Purohit Steel is a leading Cold Work Tool Steel stockist and exporter in India, supplying D2, D3, O1, O2, S1, S7 and A2 tool steel grades from ready stock with in-house machining support.

It is used for blanking and forming dies, punches, shear blades, gauges, cutting tools and other tooling that operates at or near room temperature under high wear and mechanical loads.

D2 and D3 are both high-carbon, high-chromium cold work steels with similar hardness (58-62 HRC). D3 has higher carbon and chromium for maximum wear resistance, while D2 offers a better balance of wear resistance and toughness. See the grades table above.

O1 and O2 oil-hardening grades are preferred for precision tools, gauges and knives thanks to their excellent machinability and dimensional stability during hardening.

S1 and S7 are shock-resisting tool steels used for chisels, punches, forging tools, shear blades and dies subject to repeated impact loading, where toughness is more critical than maximum wear resistance.

A2 is an air-hardening cold work tool steel offering a good balance of wear resistance, toughness and minimal distortion during hardening, used for dies, punches and shear blades.
